On the first weekend of March 2024, Andrey, Benjamin, Carolin, Daniel, David, Hugues, Ilya, Jörg, Lilja and Sam set out to learn the art of igloo building. The igloo aficionados Felix and Arnd led this “skill transfer workshop” with the support of the experienced igloo builders Elena and Mario.

Stacking snowstones of the same size on top of each other in a circle with a gently increasing incline – what sounds simple was the challenge on Saturday. Because that’s the way to build an igloo. The building site was at the top of the Fondei valley and was not chosen entirely by chance, as a nearby hut provides a certain amount of reassurance when building igloos with beginners.

But the hut was not needed. By nightfall, all seven igloos were finished and comfortable places to sleep were guaranteed. After dinner, a celebratory toast was raised.

After a restful night, an AACZ classic was on the agenda for Sunday: A ski tour to the Mattjisch Horn.
